GO OUTSIDE #12: Are We in the Era of Crisis or Opportunity?
Climate Week recap, planetary boundaries, and some ancient Chinese wisdom for our modern times
Have you been outside today?
Climate Report:
75,000 took to the streets of Manhattan in the March to End Fossil Fuels. We are in a new era of global mobilization that explicitly calls out fossil fuels as the cause of the climate crisis.
This was the largest climate protest in the US since the start of the pandemic (and it’ll only keep growing 💪).
Founders intro:
Hi Stewards,
We’re writing this newsletter after a whirlwind New York Climate Week. We had almost the whole STEWARD team in town, hi from Central Park!
We loved meeting so many stewards in person and loved having you attend our private events for the community: from a sail around the city coastline to this intimate sunset panel on regenerative fashion solutions overlooking the city, check out our view! A concrete jungle, yes, but at its core is still a temperate forest ecosystem:
About ten days ago, scientists announced that we have crossed six out of the nine planetary boundaries.
What does this mean? A study from 2009 first outlined nine planetary constraints that keep Earth’s environment similar to that of the world humans lived in during the preindustrial era. The nine planetary boundary includes scientific calculations on ocean acidification, land system change, ozone depletion, and biosphere integrity, to name a few. Humanity has now crossed six out of the nine.
The Chinese word for crisis is Wei Ji 危机. Wei means crisis while Ji means opportunity. In ancient Chinese philosophy, opportunities often arise from crises.
We are in such a pivotal time for humanity. Yes it’s a climate crisis, but it’s also an opportunity, a call to action to change. At STEWARD, action is the antidote to our anxiety.
If you think this is just a NFT project, think again. STEWARD is completely revamping how we fund and scale climate solutions as individuals and engaged citizens.
We are gearing up for our Mint Wave Launch #2 next month.
In the meantime, we created a step-by-step guide to help with the process of buying STEWARD artwork and troubleshoot issues along the way. Follow along, and reach out to us if anything else comes up!
If you’re already a steward, share this newsletter with a friend.
What’s going on in Climate 3.0?
Nature4Climate, a coalition of environmental organizations advocating for a nature-positive future, had an incredible showcase at Climate Week of nature-based solutions aided by technology like blockchain, satellite monitoring, drones, and mobile apps.
One example is Meridia, a geospatial data company which provides affordable land documentation to smallholder farms to drive the transition towards regenerative supply chains.
Steward Spotlight:
15 incredible stewards of the planet with 15 incredible innovations: introducing the 2023 Earthshot Prize Finalists!
These trailblazers are offering new solutions to repair and regenerate our environment across five areas: nature, air, oceans, waste, and climate. All finalists will take part in the Earthshot Prize Fellowship to help them scale their projects and make transformational impact.
