GO OUTSIDE #19: Stewards at COP28
Have you been outside today?
Climate Report:
1.5 degrees Celsius is on the tip of the tongue at COP28, happening during the hottest year on record. World leaders are gathering to discuss how to keep within the global temperature limits set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Founders Intro:
Hi Stewards,
We made it to the desert ecosystem of Dubai for COP28!
Our co-founder, Sophia, is there hosting panels for the United Nations and Oceanic Global, one of our nonprofit partners. If you see her running around, say hi!
For those of you who might be overwhelmed by what’s going on during this two-week-long summit of 84,000 people, you’re not alone. Thankfully, STEWARD Eco-Ambassador, environmentalist, and educator Qiyun put together this incredibly comprehensive resource guide to COP28 to walk you through the who’s who and what’s what of this global gathering.
If you’re not at COP28 in person, you’re not out of the loop! You can still follow important discussions through these livestreams:
Amidst some of the questions and controversy of COP28, we’re hopeful that powerful agreements can be reached to transition the planet away from fossil fuels, support communities impacted by increasing extreme weather, and increase nature-positive action.
There’s already been some good news, including the first Global Cooling Pledge joined by 63 countries to reduce cooling-related emissions 68% by 2050 and a new "loss and damage fund" to help lower-income countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis finance their response to extreme weather. In just the first four days, over $57 billion has been pledged in a variety of climate initiatives.
If you’re attending COP28 in person, be sure to take your day of rest happening today, December 7. These conferences can be exhausting, and we need to take care of ourselves to sustain this important work.
Our own energy is the most renewable resource! We’ll report back with a recap once the summit is all wrapped up!
One world,
Steward Olivia
