Go Outside #2: It’s Getting Hot in Here
Summer solstice, this week in Climate 3.0 and step-by-step guide to your digital wallet.
Have you been outside today?
Climate Report: El Niño está aquí
Mexico: extreme heat wave
Founders Intro:
Hi Stewards,
Happy summer solstice! It may be a mild summer so far in New York but in other parts of the world, the heat waves have begun. Enter El Niño.
El Niño is the warm phase of the Pacific Ocean's temperature cycle, and this summer's El Niño is poised to make a grand entrance, sending shock waves into weather patterns around the world. It's already setting new heat records in Mexico, will energize rainfall in South America, fuel drought in Africa, and disrupt the global economy.
When we hear of climate news like this, it’s easy to dismiss it as figures. But what if we could visually see climate change and weather patterns playing out in a piece of artwork we have access to everyday, like our phone screens? Enter STEWARD.
STEWARD exists to close the emotional gap we have with the climate crisis, using art as a bridge to the state of our ecosystems, while funding climate nonprofits.
Speaking of, here’s a sneak peek at our marketplace we’re building. Every steward will first receive a seed for an ecosystem at random and can immediately redeem the seed for a plant. This plant is “dynamic” which means the artwork will evolve and change over time. Watch your seed grow up! Call us the Neo Pets of climate.
What’s going on in Climate 3.0?
Wait, what is Climate 3.0? Check out edition #1 here.
Digital art + climate impact = right up our street. It’s nice to know we aren’t alone in this space, and we’re loving the new collection on Rhapsody Curated funding climate change awareness.
Unfortunately, misinformation about blockchain and NFTs is keeping climate nonprofits and NGOs from getting the support they desperately need. NFTs could provide reliable funding to conservation efforts, but they’ve gotten a dicey reputation from damning headlines about energy use.
And it’s true, some coins (ahem, bitcoin) have immense carbon footprints due to the mining process. But many cryptocurrencies are built on systems that use less energy than a Visa transaction, like carbon negative blockchain Celo.
Stewards of the week:
Naomi Davis is greening South Side Chicago, rebuilding Black communities while championing climate action with Blacks in Green.
Step 1 (of 4) to become a STEWARD:
Get a Digital Wallet: a digital wallet is very personal (like a real wallet), where you can store your digital assets. You must have one to buy a digital asset.
As there are different blockchains, there are different wallets for each blockchain (like different bank accounts). To become a STEWARD, we are using Celo as our blockchain and MetaMask as the wallet of choice.
Check out this step-by-step guide on how to download a MetaMask wallet
