Climate Report:Â
Founders Intro:
Let’s DTR (define the relationship) on web3 and climate: are they friends, foes, frenemies? The media definitely paints a picture of tension.
Though when we look at the systems that caused the climate crisis: systems of centralized capitalism, monopolized hyper-consumerism, and extractive colonialism— we can see how the ideology of web3 stands for everything on the opposite end of these spectrums.
Web3 (or the third iteration of the internet) is characterized by decentralized and peer-to-peer networks that enable greater privacy, security, and user control over data. Blockchain technology, on the other hand, is a distributed ledger system that allows secure and transparent recording of transactions and data.
Here are tangible ways web3 and blockchain technology can and already are supporting climate solutions:
Decentralization: as web3 and blockchain are built on the principle of decentralization, this means that instead of relying on a centralized authority or organization to manage climate-related data and initiatives, a decentralized network can be established. This hands over the power to communities to take direct action while reducing reliance on the middleman, promoting greater transparency, and holding big companies accountable.
Transparent and Immutable Data: Blockchain technology ensures that data recorded on the ledger is transparent and cannot be altered retroactively, making it a reliable source of information for climate-related data, such as carbon emissions, energy consumption, and environmental impact. This is huge as big polluters and governments shroud this data and cherry-pick what they do share with the public. This is beneficial for spaces beyond the climate as well, imagine if the U.S. government showed how all of our taxpayers dollars are spent on an open ledger!Â
Tokenization for Climate Incentives: Tokenization involves representing real-world assets or resources as digital tokens on a blockchain— a digital id of sorts. This can be utilized to incentivize and reward individuals and organizations for taking climate-friendly actions. Like how carbon offset tokens can be issued for implementing sustainable practices, which can then be traded or used to support climate solutions.
We’ve already seen case studies of all of the above in decentralized renewable energy platforms, climate data marketplaces, and supply chain tracking.Â
Web3 and blockchain technology is essentially another tool to scale climate solutions by infusing these principles. As we always say in the climate space, we have all the solutions— we just need to fund and scale them. That’s exactly why STEWARD was born.
Countdown to our first mint day on August 16th starts NOW!

What’s going on in Climate 3.0?
Celo just announced an exciting proposal to move from its own L1 (layer 1) Blockchain to a L2 (layer 2) on the Ethereum Blockchain, connecting mission-driven projects (like STEWARD 🌱) with a wider community. We’ll keep you posted!
We loved getting our community together IRL for an ocean yoga flow and soundbath with Wild Awake in San Francisco last Sunday. Can’t wait to see you at our next event!Â
